Welcome Dr. Andrea Eisen
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Andrea Eisen to the Department of Oncology in the Division of Medical Oncology at the rank of Professor, effective July 15, 2024. Dr. Eisen will hold the Endowed Buffett Taylor Chair in Breast Cancer Research.
Dr. Eisen earned her MD and completed residency training at the University of Toronto. She completed a two-year fellowship in clinical cancer genetics at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by an MSc in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University, and the New and Emerging Academic Leadership Program at the University of Toronto. Dr. Eisen became Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University (2000-2003). She became Assistant Professor in the Department Medicine at the University of Toronto in 2003. Dr. Eisen was recently promoted to full Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
Since 2014, Dr. Eisen has been the Provincial Breast Cancer lead for Cancer Care Ontario (Ontario Health). In this role, she is responsible for prioritizing, promoting and leading the development of clinical practice guidelines, including the review and update of existing documents. She has authored 12 guidelines related to the management of breast cancer. Several have been joint collaborations with the Ontario Health Program in Evidence Based Care and the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and thus have set the international standard. Dr. Eisen has been Head of the Cancer Genetics and High-Risk Program at the Odette Cancer Centre since 2010, where she has led the expansion of this Program, which now includes six full-time genetic counsellors and attracts over 2,000 new referrals annually.
As a member of the Medical Oncology Division at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Dr. Eisen will have new patient and follow-up clinics in breast cancer and cancer genetics two half days per week.
As the Buffett Taylor Chair in Breast Cancer Research, Dr. Eisen will develop a research program in breast cancer with a focus on high-risk hereditary cancer syndromes and cancer genetics. The Buffett Taylor Chair was established in 1999, and funding for this endowed position at McMaster University was made possible through a gift from Buffett Taylor and Associates. Dr. Eisen will also hold a Scientist position with the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute.
Dr. Eisen’s commitment to education will include supervision of graduate and postgraduate trainees conducting research related to breast cancer with a focus on high-risk hereditary cancer syndromes and cancer genetics, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate clinical trainees based in the clinic and hospital settings.
